The Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh was built in the memory of Gurudev Rabindernath Tagore under the Government of India sponsored scheme during the Tagore Centenary Celebrations.The Tagore Theatre started its functions in september 1962.In planning this Theatre, an attempt has been made to group the various units attached to the Theatre in a manner that will present a compact structure with all necessary amenities and comforts. A functional aspect of planning has been adopted so as to give facilities to amateur as well as professional drama groups for presenting productions of various types.The Tagore Theatre is run by Tagore Theatre Society which was formed in 1962 with Late Sh. Prithviraj Kapoor,the renowned Theatre and Film actor as its First Chairman.The Society was registered in 1972. Tagore Theatre was renovated in the year 2008.
Besides pursuing its main objective to encourage and promote the performing/folk form of arts, Tagore Theatre Society has started its own Repertory with the name Tagore Drama Repertory so as to promote the local artists. The Repertory started working in the year 2015. It produces its Plays with local Artists and the Play so produced are staged all over India which gives enough exposure to the Artists and contributes to the enrichment of art and culture
